3,500 Chinese Babies Named “Olympics”

There has been a lot of crazy stuff going on in China in anticipation for the 2008 Olympics. None quite so strange as this story.

Nearly 3,500 children, since the year 2000, have been named after the 2008 Olympics.

3,500 were named “Aoyun”, meaning Olympics, in 2000 when the bid first came up to have the Olympics in China.

Additionally, more than 4,000 people have been named after the “Five Friendlies.” The Five Friendlies are 5 different animated characters that play in Chinese Olympics commercials.

The names are Bei Bei (880 people), Jing Jing (1,240), Huan Huan (1,063), Ying Ying (624) and Ni Ni (642). When put together, the phrase translates to “Beijing welcomes you!”

Car pulling and Egg walking Beijing Olympics 2008

A man from Changchun, Jilin Province, pulled a 3-ton-car with his belly in an attempt to set a Guinness world record.

Zhang Xingquan, 40, pulled the car with a rope around his waist for more than 10 meters on January 4 on a TV program broadcast by China Central Television in Beijing. The feat is being submitted to Guinness World Records, which is based in London.

He said he would pull a car with his ears for 100 meters while walking on eggs without breaking them during the Beijing 2008 Olympics.

When to Go

Summer (June to August) is considered peak season, when hotels typically raise their rates and the Great Wall nearly collapses under the weight of marching tourists. The autumn months between September and November have the best weather and fewer tourists. Spring is less pleasant - not many tourists but lots of wind and dust. In winter, you'll have Beijing to yourself and many hotels offer substantial discounts - just remember it's an ice box outside. Everything is chock-a-block during the Chinese New Year (usually in January or February).

Clothing

In autumn, jeans and a sweater are usually enough. In the warmer months, T-shirts and light pants or shorts are the best bet. In the colder months, it is wise to dress in layers: long underwear and jeans, shirt, sweater and down jacket. If you want to go local, you can buy a thick cotton army coat (jun da yi) for less than 100 yuan (12 bucks). Rain gear is necessary, especially during the summer months

The 250,000 square metre (gross floor area) stadium is to be built with 36 km of unwrapped steel, with a combined weight of 45,000 tonnes. The medal for the beijing 2008 Olympic Games is designed with inspiration coming from “bi”, China’s ancient jade piece inscribed with dragon pattern. The medals, made of gold and jade, symbolize nobility and virtue and are embodiment of traditional Chinese values of ethics and honor, sending forth strong Chinese flavor.
The medals are 70mm in diameter and 6mm in thickness. On the front side, the medal adopts standard design prescribed by the International Olympic Committee. While on the back, the medal is inlaid with jade with the beijing Games emblem engraved in the metal centerpiece. The design inspiration of the medal hook derives from jade “huang”, a ceremonial jade piece with decoration of double dragon pattern and “Pu”, the reed mat pattern.

BEJING, Feb. 16 -- "Beijing promises not to set a dual standard for 2008 Olympics ticket prices", Beijing vice mayor Liu Jingmin said on an Olympic themed-program yesterday that aired on Beijing Television.

"If Chinese and Westerners are stimulating different prices, it will not respect the Olympic spirit."

After more than one year of study, including an online analysis, the Beijing Organizing Committee for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad (BOCOG), instituted the final ticket prices based on how much people can give, said Liu, who is also the vice executive president of BOCOG.

Liu more explained the conclusion drawn from in-depth study on both urban and rural use levels was to adopt the relatively low 2008 olympics ticket price system through the Beijing Games.

"The sum of the 2008 games fares less than 100 yuan (12.5 U.S. dollars) accounts for the 58 percent of the sum," Liu said," compared to the tickets fee of Athens and Sydney Olympic Games, 2008 fares could be cheaper.

When asked if someone with higher incomes would be charged more, Liu said "that's absolutely prohibited, it goes against the Olympic spirit of honesty, fairness and openness to all."

More work should be done to promise the fair distribution of low-price Olympic tickets

The long-awaited ticket prices for the 2008 Beijing Olympics were available on Nov.29, 2006 on the official site of the Games and the prices for seats at the opening ceremony are as low as 200 yuan (25.50 U.S. dollars). More than 58 per cent of all tickets for open sale will cost 100 yuan (13 U.S. dollars) or less, with the lowest price being 30 yuan (4 U.S. dollars).

The BOCOG will also present student tickets, which account for about 14 per cent of all locally available tickets and cost merely 5 yuan (0.64 U.S. dollars) for preliminaries and 10 yuan (1.28 U.S. dollars) for finals.

One of the basic image elements of the Olympics, the Olympic Games Pictograms are widely applied in areas such as Olympic directional instruction system, advertising and communications, landscape and environmental arrangement, TV broadcasting and souvenir designs. The Pictograms play an important role in identifying the Olympic sports as well as in Olympic marketing.

Named "the beauty of seal characters" and with strokes of seal characters as their basic form, the Pictograms of the beijing 2008 Olympic Games integrate pictographic charm of inscriptions on bones and bronze objects in ancient China with simplified embodiment of modern graphics, making them recognizable, rememberable and easy to use. Skillfully using the effect of sharp contrast between the black and white colors which the typical Chinese traditional artistic form of rubbings have, the Pictograms of the beijing Olympic Games display distinct motion character, graceful aesthetic perception of movement and rich cultural connotations, thus arriving at the harmony and unity of form with conception.

The beijing Olympics Pictograms comprise of 35 sport icons, namely those of athletics, rowing, badminton, baseball, basketball, boxing, canoe / kayak flatwater, canoe / kayak slalom, cycling, equestrian, fencing, football, artistic gymnastics, rhythmic gymnastics, trampoline, weightlifting, handball, hockey, judo, wrestling, swimming, synchronized swimming, diving, water polo, modern pentathlon, softball, taekwondo, tennis, table tennis, shooting, archery, triathlon, sailing, volleyball and beach volleyball.

In March 2005, BOCOG invited four professional design institutes and organizations to the solicitation campaign of Pictograms of the beijing 2008 Olympic Games. The design based on "seal characters" by China Central Academy of Fine Arts and that on "string" by Academy of Arts and Design, Tsinghua University were shortlisted after experts' appraisal.

A joint design working group between China Central Academy of Fine Arts and Academy of Arts and Design constantly improved and perfected the design in accordance with the suggestions of BOCOG and experts home and abroad.

In December 2005, BOCOG submitted the beijing Olympic Pictograms to the 28 International Sports Federations (IFs) for approval, and all of IFs had endorsed the Pictograms by April 2006. And in June this year, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) granted the set of the Pictograms.

Serb Ivanovic eyes world number one position

Serbian teenager Ana Ivanovic believes that she is on the right way to win the Grand Slam title and able to reach the world number one rankings in future after her slump to the top seed Justine Henin of Belgium 6-1, 6-2 in the French Open final on Saturday.

"For sure, I have ambitions to win Grand Slams and reach a position of number one, but I think this was a great experience for me. And in order to reach that, I have to go through these situations and through lot of tough matches, and also dealing with the nerves and the pressure," said the world number seven.

"I think I am working on the right way and I will keep doing what I am doing."

Appearing in the first Grand Slam final of her young career, Ivanovic just posed challenge towards Henin in the first two games of the match and struggled poorly throughout the remaining time, making 31 unforced errors to 14 of Henin and five double faults to just one of her opponent.

"She's been there before, and she won grand slams many times before so she knew how to deal with the nerves. For me, that was the first time.

"And obviously, I wanted to perform well. And I felt really good through the whole tournament, so I wanted to show my best again today. And I was little bit overexcited, and maybe even trying to do too much.

"I can actually learn from Justine, because she's such a great champion. And I'm sure she was nervous as well, but she just dealt with that better than I did today. And I can learn from her."

Ivanovic said that she struggled with her ball toss in her opening service game and that got her concentration completely off her mind.

"On 40-15 in that game I, all of a sudden, started feeling nervous, and my ball toss was going everywhere, so I couldn't really control it. I start to think more about that instead of my game."

"Even when I had some chances to come back, and I played a few good points, she was there. She didn't give me much of a window, and it was tough."

Ivanovic has high hopes for the grass season after reaching her best-ever result in a grand slam and proving this year to be one of the best young players on the WTA tour with a title in Berlin.

"I think my game can be really good on grass. And especially now, I try to come more often to the net," she said. "So hopefully, that will be very good for Wimbledon."

NGOs and sports world on same track for sustainability

Environmental organisations and sports organisations have increasingly matching agendas when it comes to sustainability. It is about making sport more sustainable, and sustainability more relevant. And it is about joining forces through partnerships. This was confirmed by today's presentations by environmental NGOs such as Greenpeace and the WWF, which showcased their initiatives in the context of the Olympic Games at the 7th World Conference on Sport and the Environment, currently taking place in Beijing, China.

Towards "Green Olympics"

All of the NGOs present have been working with the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games Organising Committee (BOCOG), and all of them are aiming towards a "Green Olympics". Lo Sze Ping, Campaign and Communications Director from Greenpeace China, stressed that it was important for Greenpeace to contribute to the Games' success by offering solutions to environmental challenges. In addition to its close cooperation with BOCOG, Greenpeace has teamed up with Coca Cola, Worldwide Partner of the Olympic Movement, for Beijing 2008. Their common project of setting up 6,000 ozone-friendly and climate-friendly coolers and 350 corresponding vending machines in all official venues of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, during their 10-year life span, will have an effect comparable to taking 218,000 cars off the road during the two weeks of the 2008 Olympic Games. For Lo Sze Ping, the trilateral partnership between a sponsor, an NGO and an Organising Committee is a success story which, for Beijing, will leave a legacy far beyond 2008.

Involving the population is key

Involving the population in their environmental campaigns and projects in the run-up to the 2008 Olympic Games was unanimously described as key by the NGOs: be it encouraging Beijing's citizens to have a car-free day, teaching them how to reduce dust pollution and to avoid wasting water, implementing awareness-raising campaigns in schools or holding lectures for students. WWF China representative, Dermot O'Gorman, highlighted the WWF's "20 ways to 20%" nationwide awareness campaign, which aims to complement China’s goal to reduce energy consumption by 20% by 2020. Twenty tips on how to be environmentally friendly on a day-to-day basis are being widely advertised on public spaces all over China. The campaign will run until the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, but the awareness switch will have benefits long after the Closing Ceremony.

Looking beyond 2008
Both, Greenpeace and the WWF have already worked with Olympic Games Organising Committees in the past, and both are already looking beyond 2008. The WWF supports the organisers of the London 2012 Olympic Games in shaping their sustainability policies, such as for reducing the environmental impact of the venue constructions and finding clever transport solutions. It is about respecting the environment in Games planning and operations – from the beginning of a city's desire to stage the Olympic Games through to the long-term effects of those Games.

Penultimate Coordination Commission Visit

With the Beijing Games now only 10 months away, the IOC’s Coordination Commission for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games will visit the Chinese capital for the ninth time next week. Under the leadership of Commission Chairman Hein Verbruggen, the members of the Commission will meet with their Beijing Organising Committee (BOCOG) counterparts to fully understand the state of BOCOG’s progress as the Games approach and also to review the lessons learned, so far, from the Good Luck Beijing Sports Events that have already taken place.

Equestrian Events in 2008

Ahead of their visit to Beijing, some members of the Commission will pay a visit to Hong Kong in order to get a first-hand view of the venues that will be used during the Beijing 2008 equestrian events. These venues were already tried and tested during last August’s Good Luck Beijing HKSAR 10th Anniversary Celebration Invitation Cup Eventing Competition, and were highly praised by competitors for their quality.

Sport & Environment

Following on directly from the Coordination Commission meetings, the IOC and BOCOG, in partnership with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), will hold the 7th World Conference on Sport and the Environment in Beijing. This forum will enable an exchange of knowledge between the sporting world, NGOs and environmental specialists about the different ways that sport is looking after the environment that it affects and that it is affected by. Under the motto “From Plan to Action”, the focus of the conference will lie in translating opportunities into practical action to ensure a sustainable future.
